Friday, 22nd August, marked the final day of operation at the current Live Active Blairgowrie facility, affectionately known as “The Reccy.” Since opening its doors on 22nd September 1982, the centre has been a cornerstone of the Blairgowrie community for over four decades, offering a 20m swimming pool, six-court games hall, gymnasium, and fitness gym.

As the community prepares to welcome a brand-new leisure centre on the 29th of August, many have taken the opportunity to reflect on the memories made within these walls, none more poignant than those shared by local resident and regular swimmer, Kerry Ramsay.

“My Grandad, Millar Ramsay, was well known in the local community and a regular swimmer here until lockdown.” Kerry shared. “He knew all the staff and affectionately called Irene at reception ‘Smiler.’ A real character, he started every swim by diving into the deep end, even in his 90s!”

Millar Ramsay began swimming at the centre when it first opened in 1982 and continued his routine three times a week until the COVID-19 lockdown. He passed away during that time, never getting the chance to enjoy one final swim. Yet his legacy lives on through his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who continue to swim at the centre he loved so dearly.

“We are just one of many families where generations have benefited from the current facility,” Kerry added. “It is lovely to have the opportunity to reflect and celebrate the impact ‘The Reccy’ has had on our local community.”

In a touching tribute, Kerry swam the final length of the pool alongside her nephews, Jaxon, and Mac, during the last Fun Session, marking five years since Millar’s passing and honouring his memory in the very place he cherished.

Alongside Kerry’s tribute, the final Fun Swim was a joyful celebration for many families, with laughter, splashes, and smiles filling the pool one last time. Photos from the event capture the spirit of the community that has grown around “The Reccy” over the past 42 years.

Looking ahead, the new Live Active Blairgowrie centre is set to open on the 29th of August, offering upgraded facilities and a fresh chapter for the community. With a modern 25m, 6 lane pool with movable floor, enhanced fitness amenities, and a continued commitment to exceptional service, the new centre will carry forward the legacy of its predecessor, welcoming new generations to make memories of their own.
