Collaborative Asylum Football Programme
Live Active Leisure, in partnership with Perth & Kinross Council’s Equalities Team and Jeanfield Swifts Community Football Club, is proud to announce that its local asylum football programme was positively referenced in a ministerial statement by Kaukab Stewart MSP, Minister for Equalities. The recognition came during her address to the Scottish Parliament following her visit to Perth on 26 August as part of the New Scots Leadership Board.
The Minister’s statement highlighted the programme’s role in fostering inclusion and wellbeing among people seeking asylum, with specific mention of the weekly football sessions that have become a cornerstone of community engagement in Perth.
Each week, the initiative welcomes around 40 participants, offering not only the joy of sport but also a vital sense of belonging. The delivery of this programme has been a collaboration between PKC Equalities, Jeanfield Swifts Football Club & Live Active Leisure, providing fixtures, involvement in the Live Active Men's Recreational Festivals and social football events. Club Development Officer Reg McLaren has been in the role since Summer 2025 and his work with the group has been to offer further integrational opportunities at the club and Perth City.
Looking ahead, the partnership is expanding its focus beyond the pitch. Plans are underway to support participants through coach education and employability skills, helping them build confidence and pathways into further opportunities.
A recent highlight includes the provision of Friendly Welcome League kits, generously funded through the Home Office People Seeking Asylum Fund. These kits have become a symbol of pride and unity, worn by participants during matches and weekly sessions.
Reg McLaren of Live Active Leisure commented “Football has the power to break down barriers and build friendships. Seeing the players come together each week, wearing their new kits and representing their communities, is a reminder of how sport can create real change.”
