What inspired you to start motorcycle racing?

My dad has raced since before I was born so I grew up around the sport and then eventually started racing once I was old enough.

Who is your biggest inspiration in the world of sport and why?

My dad is my biggest inspiration because he has taught me all the way and has taken me racing for the last 15 years and always supported me.

What are some of the challenges you face while motorcycle racing, and how do you overcome them?

There's lots of challenges when racing. The weather plays a big factor on how you race and the level of competitors is far superior when you race in England so it’s is always a challenge to be as fast as them.

What is your training regimen like, and how do you balance it with other commitments?

I train on Mondays and Wednesdays with my strength and conditioning coach Gil Stevenson, and Tuesdays and Thursdays I enjoy gym work i.e. cardio, and weekends are for getting out on the bike and getting the practice in.

What are some of the most important skills you need to excel at motorcycle racing?

It’s a very physical sport so being strong is an advantage but mentally it is a hard sport to be in because you are taking big risks and you have to be clever and be thinking all the time about if you are making the correct decisions and what the consequences could be.

What is your favourite moment or memory while motorcycle racing?

My favourite moment would be winning a British Championship race at my home circuit of Knockhill.

Lewis Paterson 360x360 1What are some of the biggest competitions or tournaments in motorcycle racing in 2024, and what are your goals for participating in them?

I will be competing in the No Limits 1000 class for this year and my goals are to be consistent top 10s and finish top 5 in the Championship.

How do you handle setbacks or challenges in your athletic endeavours?

Don’t be negative and take the positives out of the situations and come up with a plan on how not to make the mistake next time.

How do you stay motivated and focused during training and competitions?

I have family and friends that support me closely and I don't want to let them down so that keeps me motivated. Also there's prize money to be won so that's always a motivation!

Are there any rituals or routines you follow before competitions to get you in the right mindset?

I always keep training hard and make sure my bike is all prepared so I can go into the weekend feeling full of confidence.

What strategies do you use to stay mentally and physically sharp?

I study videos of the tracks I am going to and prepare what will be best physically for me as all tracks have different characteristics.

Train hard, get as much time on a bike as you can and make sure you keep on your good side of your parents!

What is your biggest accomplishment as an athlete so far?

Having 5 Scottish Championships by the age of 22 and being selected for Red Bull Rookies in Spain in 2015 and 2017.

What is your favourite sports quote?

“If you’re not scared you’re not going fast enough” Ken Block

How has Live Active’s Emerging Athlete Programme helped you to develop as an athlete?

It gives me the opportunity to train at different places free of charge and my strength and conditioning classes are helpful as it has athletes from many sports in it, all with the same goal of being the best.
