We recently caught up with James who started his Live Active career as a Lifeguard and has since progressed to become one of the Duty Leisure Managers at Perth Leisure Pool.

What is your position within Live Active?

I'm one of the Duty Leisure Managers at Perth Leisure Pool.

How long have you worked for Live Active?

I have worked for Live Active for just under 2 years.

What does your job involve in a typical day?

No two days are the same at Perth Leisure Pool! We are extremely busy at the moment, especially over the summer holiday period. It’s great to see so many people and families enjoying the fantastic facilities we have here. My job is very varied; at busy periods most of my time is taken up managing the day-to-day operations of the leisure pool which can be challenging and throw many different scenarios at you! Alongside that, there’s all the behind-the-scenes work in areas such as staffing, training, health and safety, customer service, finance, marketing and management of the venue and building.

What do you love most about your job?

I love how challenging it is, and you never know what to expect next. I also love interacting with so many different people, from all the staff in different departments to the wide variety of customers and clubs we have. It is a very intense yet rewarding role, and the saying "you learn something new every day" couldn't be more true than in this job!

Do you take part in any sports or activities in your spare time?

I used to be a club swimmer, so I try to keep my fitness up by swimming in my spare time. I have recently started running and I enjoy hillwalking when the weather is nice!

What advice would you give to someone who’s interested in a career in the leisure industry?

I would encourage anyone who is considering a career in leisure to absolutely go for it. I started as a lifeguard and never expected to become a Duty Manager. It's amazing how many opportunities and courses there are to widen your expertise and allow you to progress, providing new knowledge and great skills and experience for life. It is such a rewarding and enjoyable job, especially when you are working with such a great team like I do at Perth Leisure Pool.
