Relief Gymnastics Coaching

Our Gymnastics programme is always developing and progressing with our relief coaching team expanding with it.  We have a fantastic team of coaches who work alongside our contracted team to deliver our programme.  Our relief coaches are mentored by senior staff and are encouraged to gain qualifications and attend workshops and courses to increase their knowledge of the sport.

Volunteering

Working in partnership with PE staff and Active Schools as well as targeting senior gymnasts in our own programmes allows a clear pathway and entry to coaching for young volunteers to become involved with the sessions.  Our Volunteers are generally aged 14 & 15 years and on average complete a maximum of two hours per week.  Volunteers are mentored by our Level 1 and Level 2 coaches, developing their basic coaching skills. This promotes good working practice and once at 16 years old, volunteers are offered the opportunity to join our relief coaching team where appropriate.

Our Volunteers are encouraged to register as part of the Saltire or Youth Achievement Award schemes where they can receive nationally recognised certificates and achievements when certain milestones are met. Many of our volunteers use their hours towards the Duke of Edinburgh award and we are happy to support our coaches through the process.

Student Link Framework

The programme also has a partnership with Perth College UHI through the Community Sport Student link framework, where many of the students’ complete voluntary coaching as part of their coursework requirements.  Several students’ progress to become employed members of staff after the course finishes.

School Sport Coaching Project

The School Sport Coaching Project, supported by the Gannochy Trust, offers Perth and Kinross Council School Pupils the opportunity to undertake introductory sports coaching/leadership/officiating qualifications. This is a great way for young people to develop communication and leadership skills, build confidence, gain recognised qualifications and get experience in sports coaching/leadership/officiating. Following a course, pupils are required to undertake 20 hours of volunteering in a school/Local authority or community club setting.  The Learn to Coach Gymnastics Course takes place each year and many of our volunteers and coaches have attended the course.
